Fiscal unit required? Sorted.

Every electronic POS in Germany needs a certified fiscal unit (TSE). With the PayPoint cloud fiscal unit you are compliant in minutes — no stick, no hassle.

PayPoint POS – complete set with display, receipt printer, cash drawer and card terminal

What is a TSE — and why do you need one?

The fiscal unit protects your till data from being altered after the fact. Since the KassenSichV came in, every electronic POS system in Germany has to have one — hospitality included.

1 Every transaction is signedThe fiscal unit gives every transaction a tamper-proof digital signature. Changing anything afterwards is technically impossible.
2 Receipt obligation coveredEvery sale needs a receipt carrying the fiscal unit data. PayPoint prints the required details on every receipt automatically — or provides them digitally.
3 Export for the tax officeIn an audit you have to be able to export your data in DSFinV-K format. With PayPoint that is one button.

Your obligations at a glance

A certified fiscal unitYour POS has to be connected to a fiscal unit certified by the BSI — hardware or cloud. Without one you are not allowed to run an electronic till at all.
Registration with the tax officeSince 2025 you register your POS system and its fiscal unit through „Mein ELSTER“. A new till has to be registered within a month of purchase. PayPoint gives you all the details you need.
Issuing receiptsA receipt has to be created and offered for every transaction — printed or digital. The required fiscal unit details are part of it automatically.

Fines you risk without a fiscal unit:

€25,000

The tax office can turn up for an unannounced till inspection at any time. Take payment without a certified fiscal unit and you risk fines under § 379 AO — plus estimated turnover figures that almost always cost more than any fiscal unit.

Cloud fiscal unit or hardware fiscal unit?

Both satisfy the law. For a modern tablet POS like PayPoint the cloud version is by far the more practical choice.

Frequently asked questions

Does my restaurant have to have a fiscal unit?

Yes. Under the KassenSichV every electronic POS system in Germany has to have a certified fiscal unit. That applies to all hospitality businesses — from a takeaway to a restaurant with several locations.

What is the difference between a cloud and a hardware fiscal unit?

A hardware fiscal unit is a physical USB or SD card stick that has to sit in every till. A cloud fiscal unit runs online: no hardware, nothing to replace when it breaks, automatic updates and several tills from one place — ideal for a tablet POS like PayPoint.

What does the cloud fiscal unit cost at PayPoint?

On the Basic plan you add the certified cloud fiscal unit for €15 a month (12-month term). On the Pro and Enterprise plans it is already included.

Do I have to register my till with the tax office?

Yes. Since 2025 electronic POS systems and their fiscal units have to be registered through „Mein ELSTER“. A new system has to be registered within a month of purchase. PayPoint provides everything you need for it.

What happens in a till inspection without a fiscal unit?

The tax office can inspect without warning. Without a certified fiscal unit you face fines of up to €25,000 plus estimated turnover figures that almost always go against you.
